Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? The answer may be here! If not feel free to contact me!

What's your performance style like? What type of music do you specialize in?

I consider myself an open-format mix DJ so Im comfortable in variety of genres but am primarily playing pop, dance, hip-hop and r&b. I love a good mashup or remix but I still want it to have the feel of the original. I tend to mix quick similar to a nightclub DJ but of course tailored to be appropriate to the event or wedding I am performing at. Personally, I do love songs that have a good groove to them with elements of funk, disco or house

What is your Booking Process?

If I have your date available, I’ll email you and you’ll get a link to schedule a discovery call (and we can both do a little happy dance).

After the discovery call I will send you a customized all inclusive proposal. Once you accept the proposal you digitally sign the contract and pay the retainer to secure my creative services. This is payment 1 of 3 with the other 2 being a split of the balance and any production add ons.

How long have you been DJ'ing weddings?

I’ve been DJ’ing weddings regularly since 2016, though I started DJing long before that. On average I am doing 40-50 events a year.

Will you take song requests from our guests during the event?

Whether requests are allowed or not… your guests are still going to make them! Requests are just that though, a request, not a guarantee. If I think a requested song will work for the event then I will play it, if I do not, I won’t.

What's included in your pricing package? Will you also act as an emcee?

First the easy answer, yes I am happy to act as your MC, and will do so with a natural voice and tone. As far as packages go, well I don’t do packages because I do not believe in one size fits all for unique and milestone events. I build out custom proposals in three areas, Talent, Production, and Travel. I want you to get what you want and need, and nothing you don’t.

How many weddings do you do on an average weekend?

Most weekends I will do one wedding. During peak season or holiday weekends I may do two, but prefer to keep it to one.

How do you keep your music collection up to date?

I am constantly listening to music, and subscribe to multiple music services for DJs. Weekly I go through them to acquire the newest and hottest songs, while also looking for modern remixes to classic songs.

Do you work alone?

Most weddings I work with at least one assistant, other private events vary depending on complexity of the production.

Do you do LGBTQ+ WEDDINGS?

Absolutely. Love is Love.

I don’t need lighting can we still work together?

Maybe. I believe that lighting is essential to creating the right party atmosphere for sensational moments to occur and memories to be made. If you have hired a professional lighting company I will defer to them for the design and implementation.

Do you travel?

Yes! While Boston based, I’ve DJ’d events and weddings in places such as New York City, Las Vegas, St. Louis and Florida to name a few. I’m happy to discuss your needs for any destination event whether domestic or international.

Can we give you a list of must-hear songs? What about a do-not-play list?

YES! PLEASE! A huge part of my process is getting to know the ‘musical DNA’ of my clients and/or thier events to make sure I nail the vibe! This is a creative process and I find that the more I know about you and your music, the better the party I can provide!

Can we watch you perform before the wedding date?

Yes and no. When I have events open to the public, I’m happy to have you attend but I cannot extend an invite to someone else’s wedding or private event. The majority of my work is in the private event space, though any public events will be listed on my personal page https://djbriansmith.com.

Does your contract include an overtime clause in case we want to extend the party?

Yes, though weddings are quoted on a per day basis rather than hourly. Non-wedding events do have an hourly overtime rate.

Do you have liability insurance?

Absolutely. I carry a 2 million dollar policy and am happy to provide a COI to your venue.

What sets you apart from your competition?

2 things. First is my process, if you have read through the site you will see me mention it multiple times, it’s not just the planning meetings but the continued professional development and networking investments I make in myself year-round.

Second is the way I seamlessly integrate lighting into my performance, I believe that, when done right, lighting compliments the music and elevates the overall event.
